Gate of the Silversmiths

Giving access to the southern transversal nave of the cathedral, its columns are from the 11th cent., and are the masterpiece of tolosan masters, and come in part from the destroyed northern gate. The name comes from the plaza in which it is found, the silversmiths (orfebres) carry on their trade.

In this plaza, you will also find the Fountain of the Horses, and at the end of a set of stairs of the 18th cent., there is the oldest façade of the cathedral. AT its left, ends the western cloister of plateresc style; and at the southeastern side of the cathedral, the powerful Tower of the Clock stands. The two gates at its right, date from the year 1,103, and the sculptures belong the several epochs. The tympanum of the right façade presents scenes form the life of Jesus, and the left one depicts the Temptation of Jesus in the desert and the adulterous woman. In the center of the images above the tympanum, you could see the masterpiece of the creator of the Gate of the Silversmiths, in which show cased is Jesus Saviour, and next to it vividly marked, James the Great. This façade is an example of the rich Romanic iconography of the glorious era of Compostela. At the side of the Tower of the Clock, from another perspective, the Gate of the Catholic Kings is visible (done in the mid 17th cent.).
