Interior Patio of the Alcazar

Toledo’s Alcazar

It is an impressive building found at the highest point of the city. In the beginning, the Romans used it as a palace. After the Christians reconstructed it, during the reign of King Alfons VI; Alfons X, the Wise, continued with the construction which is the origin of the square floor plan and the battlement towers at its angles. In the 16th cent., King Charles V ordered Alonso of Covarrubias its reconstruction once more. Its façades are all distinct according to the time period and style. The western façade is of renaissance form; while the eastern one is medieval with three cylindrical battlement towers and merlon defenses. The northern one is plateresc; and the southern one was erected by Juan of Herrera, and is of churrigueresco style, and it also possesses a two story patio with Corinthian styled capitals.

The Alcazar has been the victim of fires in several occasions. In the year AD 1170, it suffered its first fire. A century later, French troops torch it again, and in other several occasion after its renovation in 1867 and 1882, it burned once again. At the outbreak of the Civil War, the Military Academy was housed here and at the end of the conflict, it was completely destroyed. Later on it would be completely reconstructed, and today it houses the Army’s offices and a museum.
