TOLEDO PUERTA DEL SOL

Obra mudéjar del siglo XIII construida por los Caballeros Hospitalarios que daba acceso a la Medina o ciudad amurallada. Su planta es rectangular terminada en semicírculo y tiene un gran arco apuntado sobre columnas, con puerta de herradura. En el centro de las arquearías ciegas se alojan fragmentos de un sarcófago paleocristiano del S.IV con una representación de las Negaciones de S. Pedro.

El relieve e esculpido sobre el arco es el emblema de la Catedral que se refiere a la imposición de la casulla a S. Ildefonso bajo el Sol y la Luna, y de ahí el nombre de esta singular puerta.

A mudíjar masterpiece of the 13th cent., it was built by the Knight's Templars giving access to the Medina or walled city. Is floor plan is rectangular finished in a semicircle and it has a great pointed arch over its columns, with a horse shoe gate. At the center of the blinded arches, the remains of a paleo-Christian sarcophagus of the 4th century (AD), with a representation of Peter's denials.

The relief is sculpted over the arch is the emblem of the cathedral referring to the imposition of the chasuble to Saint Ildefonso under the Sun and the Moon, and therefore the name of this unique gate.
