"The city of Santiago of Compostela," wrote towards the middle of the 15th cent., the noble bohemian Leon of Rosmital, "is situated between great mountains; it is beautiful and bound by a single wall, whose merlons are covered on side by yellow violets, which are visible from a far; and on the other side are covered by ivy giving them the look of a forest."
